The obvious way to turn the house into an earning asset is through advertising.

One idea is that the bricks that make up a brick built house can act as pixels - through the use of different coloured bricks messages can be built in - text, pictures etc.

The long term advertiser could pay an annual or lump sum fee to the home builder to build their logo or message into the side of the building - forever!

Imagine a street with a subtle pepsi sign built into the brick work at the front of every house.

This could provide money to offset the cost of house built without having to resort to lowering build quality.

Long term vs Short term advertising

Had a good (if slightly drunken) discussion with Mark last night about this idea. He quite correctly pointed out that the normal requirement for an advertising space is for it to be able to handle change quickly and regularly. The idea floated here is obviously one of a very long term advertising event i.e. as long as the house is standing. To me it is still a valid one as some companies expect to survive for the long term.

Short term advertising space would probably require planning permission in most countries probably harder to achieve than a one off request to maintain a known image that will become part of local history and have the by-product of cost offset for a house build.
